Wolyta Celebrating Its New Year, ‘Gifata’, working to get inscribed it by UNESCO
Addis Ababa, September 26, 2021 (FBC) – Wolyta, in Southern Ethiopia, is celebrating the nation’s New Year, Gifata, with cultural and historical symposiums in Wolyta Sodo town.
Chief administrator of the zone Endrias Geta, and Culture, Tourism & Sports Department head Getachew Gebu said activities are under way for inscribing ‘Gifata’ by UNESCO as intangible world cultural heritage of humanity.
Wolyta Sodo University and other institutions are collaborating on the effort, they said.
‘Gifata’ celebration incorporates religious and cultural rituals. Science and Higher Education Minister Samuel Urkato (PhD) and other officials have participated in the event.
In addition to ‘Gifata’, Meskel, falling on September 27, is one of the colorfully celebrated festivals in Wolyta zone.
