Water infrastructure works progressing well to restore full service in Tigray region: Minister
Addis Ababa, February 9, 2023 (FBC) – The Ministry of Water and Energy-Ethiopia (MoWE) has announced that extensive work is being carried out to restart all the water infrastructures damaged by the conflict in the Tigray region.
Speaking to Fana Broadcasting Corporate, Minister of Water and Energy, Habtamu Itefa, stated that concerted efforts are being made to restore water services to 5.4 million citizens in the Tigray region.
Following the return of peace, several works have been carried out to repair and restart water facilities that were damaged in various areas of the region.
In particular, the Minister indicated that the necessary maintenance work has been done in 76 cities and woredas, including Adwa, Axum, Shire, Shiraro, Selekhlekha, Adi Hageray, Adi Daero, Adi Nebri’id, Endabaguna, and Wuqro Maray.
As a result of this effort, more than 1.3 million citizens were able to regain drinking water access, the Minister said.
Recalling the ministry has so far spent more than 60 million birr to restore those services, he indicated that local and international partners also made various contributions.
The Minister also stated that his office will work in coordination with partners to restore the water infrastructures that were damaged in other areas.
