Upper house deliberates on scheduled election of Tigray Region
Addis Ababa, September 5, 2020 (FBC) – The House of Federation has deliberated on the resolution submitted to it by constitutional interpretations and identity affairs standing committee of the house of peoples representatives regarding the election Tigray regional State set to hold on coming Wednesday September 9, 2020.
It is to be recalled that the house of federation requested constitutional interpretation on the 6th national elections based on the request the national electoral board of Ethiopia applied to the house of peoples representatives.
And the upper house, based on the constitutional interpretations it received from the council of constitutional inquiry has passed a resolution for the postponement of the election and extension of the power of the executive bodies amid the pandemic.
Although the resolution passed by the upper house regarding postponement of the elections shall be effective in regional governments, Tigray regional state instead to hold the regional election on coming Wednesday defying the federal government.
According to the resolution the constitutional interpretations and identity affairs standing committee of the house of peoples representatives referred to the house, the activities being carried out Tigray regional state to hold the election is contradictory to constitutional provisions regarding the power share between the federal and regional organs.
The House is thoroughly deliberating on the issues it received from the Council of Constitutional Inquiry to pass a decision accordingly.
