Up to 90mln Ethiopians expected to own digital ID in three years
Addis Ababa, July 27, 2023 (FBC) – The National ID Program of the Office of the Prime Minister announced that 70 to 90 million citizens in Ethiopia will use digital ID in the next three years.
It is stated that more than 1.5 million citizens have registered for the National ID Program.
It was also said that the national ID will allow citizens to access any service in the entire country.
Chalie Ambaye, Senior Supervisor of the National ID Program stated that a national ID can be issued by having a local residence (Kebele) ID, driver’s license, passport, birth card, educational certificate, bank account.
Therefore, he pointed out that it is possible to get the service by visiting the centers that are collecting applicants’ information.
Henok Tilahun, Director of Registration of the National ID Program, said that the National ID will enable citizens to verify their identity digitally.
He also said that digital identity will open the door to the growing number of digital services and is crucial for economic growth.
Indicating the multifaceted benefits of the digital ID, the Director has called on Ethiopians to register in order to receive the service.
