UNHCR Deputy High Commissioner lauds Ethiopia for hosting large number of refugees
Addis Ababa, July 5, 2023 (FBC) – Deputy High Commissioner of UNHCR, Kelly T. Clements and her delegation have visited Jewi Refugee Camp in Gambella Region of Ethiopia.
The Deputy High Commissioner visited, among others, infrastructures built for the purpose of income generating activities being carried out by the refugees sheltered in the camp. On the occasion, the Deputy High Commissioner lauded Ethiopia’s commitment in hosting a large number of refugees in camps situated in its several parts.
She stressed the need to involve refugees in development activities to deter shortage of food and other basic needs due to unparalleled increment of asylum-seekers and refugees worldwide.
Kelly T. Clements encourages refugees to become entrepreneurs and income generators among host communities to supplement the humanitarian activities being carried out by the relief organizations.
CEO of the Ethiopian Refugees and Returnees Service, Tesfahun Gobezay said on the occasion that the visit helped as a good platform to shed light on the real situation in the refugee sites across the nation.
Tesfahun indicated that Gambella Region is currently sheltering more than 383,000 refugees in seven camps.
