UN Deputy SG visit to Ethiopia sheds light on atrocities committed by TPLF: MFA

Addis Ababa, February 17, 2022 (FBC) – In a press briefing, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Dina Mufti updates local and international media on various issues related the political and diplomatic spheres.

The Spokesperson said that the 35th AU Summit that discussed various agenda focusing on peace and security, the Coronavirus pandemic and economic and development activities in Africa was successfully and peacefully concluded.

Ambassador Dina told journalists that the visit of Deputy General Secretary of the United Nations, Amina J. Mohammed to Afar and Amhara Regions enabled the UN senior officials to have a clear view about the atrocities committed by the terrorist TPLF Group against innocent civilians.

The Deputy Secretary General witnessed the human and property damage TPLF inflicted in the two regions, he said.

Deputy Secretary General’s visit to the Somali Region also helped her to witness the humanitarian situation in the area, the Spokesperson added.

He added said the Deputy Secretary General called on the international community to join hands to address the humanitarian need in Ethiopia after physically witnessing what is really happening in Ethiopia.

Spokesperson also indicated that the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Demeke Mekonnen held talks with Dr. Annette Weber, European Union Special Representative for the Horn of Africa.

According to Ambassador Dina said the Deputy Prime Minister briefed the envoy about the positive steps that the Ethiopian government has taken so far to achieve lasting peace in the country, which needs proper recognition from the EU.

The Special envoy, on her part, expressed appreciation for the positive measures the government has taken to give peace a chance, the Spokesperson noted.

The Spokesperson further stressed need to address root causes for human trafficking and illegal migration in order to safeguard citizens from unwelcome suffering due to such challenges.
