UN commends Ethiopia for IDP Protection Proclamation

Addis Ababa, May 8, 2024 (FBC) – State Minister Ambassador Mesganu Arga met at his office today Mr. Robert Piper, UN Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Solutions to Internal Displacement.

Ambassador Mesganu highlighted specific measures introduced by the Ethiopian Government that have aided in the relocation of individuals who were internally displaced to their respective regions.

Mr. Piper, on his part, appreciated the Ethiopia’s government move to finalize the national proclamation to protect and assist IDP’s. He said an astounding number of IDPs are returning to their areas of origin in Ethiopia, which signifies improved security conditions and other favorable factors.

The discussion between the two sides also indicated the need for cooperation and coordination between humanitarian development and peace actors.

The discussion in this regard focused on the potential extent of UN-Ethiopian cooperation in supporting the DDR program, as outlined in the Pretoria Peace Agreement.
