UN chief reaffirms continued support to Ethiopia
Addis Ababa, September 22, 2023 (FBC) – Antonio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary General, received at his office Thursday Demeke Mekonnen, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Ethiopia, in New York, on the margins of UNGA78.
Recalling his days at UNHCR, Guterres said he feels deep solidarity with the people of Ethiopia and wishes Ethiopia the best success in addressing its socioeconomic challenges.
He said he is committed to strengthening the UN’s ties with Ethiopia. He said Ethiopia is a key player in the multilateral system.
For his part, DPM & FM Demeke commended the UN and Guterres, in particular for his personal dedication to supporting Ethiopia during the past trying times.
Demeke briefed Guterres of the implementation of the peace agreement and called on the global body to support reconstruction, rehabilitation efforts, and other humanitarian issues.
