UN agencies reaffirm cooperation to Ethiopia’s post-conflict peacebuilding undertakings
Addis Ababa, September 23, 2023 (FBC) – United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) and United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA) expressed desires to continue cooperating in post-conflict peacebuilding undertakings in Ethiopia.
The two UN agencies reaafirmed their continued support during a meeting between Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Ethiopia, Demeke Mekonnen, UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell, and UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, Martin Griffiths.
Deputy Prime Minister Demeke briefed both Ms. Russell and Mr. Griffiths about the ongoing development in Ethiopia.
He said his country has a firm commitment to implement the Pretoria Peace Agreement and accelerate post-conflict recovery and reconstruction measures.
He also praised UNICEF for its support of Ethiopian children in the education and health sectors.
Martin Griffiths also told Demeke that it is important to continue and revamp suspended humanitarian support in Ethiopia.
Both the heads of the respective UN agencies expressed the desire of both institutions to continue cooperating in post-conflict peacebuilding.
