Tobacco Free Campaign Launched in Addis Ababa

Addis Ababa, May 16, 2024 (FBC) – A campaign aimed at making Addis Ababa tobacco free city launched by the City Administration’s Food and Drug Authority today.

The campaign was launched in connection with World No Tobacco Day, (WNTD) that is being celebrated under the theme of ‘Protecting children from tobacco industry (TI) interference,’ in the presence of Speaker of Addis Ababa City Council, Buzena Alkedir, Addis Ababa Food and Drug Authority General Manager Mulumebet Tadese and other stakeholders.

This year’s focuses on advocating for an end to the targeting of youth with harmful tobacco products.

This event provides a platform for young people, policy-makers and tobacco control advocates globally to discuss the issue and to urge governments to adopt policies that shield young people from the manipulative practices of the tobacco and related industries.

Addis Ababa City Council Speaker, Buzena Alkedir stressed the need to give highest priority to citizens’ health in order to realize the development efforts being underway in the city.

The speaker said that every citizen should do their part to prevent the harm caused by tobacco, ENA reported.

According to the Speaker, activities are underway to create a city exemplary in its cleanliness and beauty as well as a better life for the residents.

Food and Drug Authority manager, Mulumebet Tadese, said that awareness creation activities are being carried out to prevent people from smoking in public places.
