Three localties in Afar region hit by heavy flooding as Awash River overflows its banks
Addis Ababa, August 8, 2021 (FBC) – Three localities in Asayta Woreda of the Afar Regional State have been hit by a severe flooding as the River Awash overflowed its banks due to heavy rains.
Head of the Disaster Risk Management and Food Security Bureau of the Region, Aydahis Yasin said people from 100 households fled their homes as the flooding had ravaged their residential places.
Over 50 ha of agricultural land has been heavily affected and crops damaged by the flooding, he added.
Additional 90,000 people in 40 localities of these three will be impacted by potential risk of flooding in some Woredas of the region, he said, adding that the bureau along with concerned stakeholders have taken preventive measures and created awareness among the communities in risky areas.
