The Living Museum: Harar city is a must-visit destination – PMO
Addis Ababa, March 16, 2025 (FMC) – Among Ethiopia’s many tourism treasures, the fortified historic town of Harar stands out as a must-visit destination, according to the Office of the Prime Minister.
It is noteworthy that the Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and his delegation visited Harar city, dubbed as the Living Museum, this week.
In light of this the PM Office has shared a short highlight of Harar city’s current status, accompanied with a short video footage showcasing the historic city’s dazzling faces.
“Located in the eastern part of the country, Harar is surrounded by ancient walls built between the 13th and 16th centuries, enclosing a sacred city rich in history and culture. Within these walls are 82 mosques and 102 shrines, forming one of the world’s largest concentrations of mosques.”
Harar’s vibrant markets and distinctive architecture reflect its centuries-old role as the most important trade hub in the Horn of Africa. Recognising its cultural significance, UNESCO inscribed Harar Jugol as a World Heritage Site in 2006, the PM Office reminded.
Visitors can explore notable landmarks such as the Arthur Rimbaud Museum, which commemorates the French poet’s time in the city.
As night falls, one of Harar’s most famous traditions comes to life—the Hyena Men, who emerge to feed wild hyenas in a captivating ritual.
