Sweden keen to continue supporting Ethiopia’s climate initiatives: Ambassador

Addis Ababa, November 21, 2024 (FBC) – In a recent interview with FBC, the Swedish Ambassador to Ethiopia emphasized the importance of strengthening collaboration on waste management to promote environmental sustainability.

“We must ensure the effective recycling of waste produced by communities. This is a prime example of how we can unite social entrepreneurs, private stakeholders, civil society, NGOs, and the Addis Ababa Cleansing Management Agency to work together,” the Ambassador stated.

Sweden prioritizes partnership with Ethiopia in areas of reforestation and waste management, acknowledging the country’s successful tree planting and environmental conservation efforts. We will continue to maintain such collaboration which is critical to enhance Ethiopia’s strategies in addressing climate change, the Ambassador said.

The Ambassador noted Sweden’s commitment to support reforestation and afforestation projects in various regions of Ethiopia, leveraging Sweden’s extensive experience in forest management for mutual benefit.

At the COP29, Ethiopia’s government, along with its civil society and entrepreneurs, highlighted the nation’s contributions to global climate mitigation efforts.

While recognizing that Sweden and other European nations are among the largest polluters, the Ambassador asserted that combating climate change is a global responsibility, pointing out the need for major polluters to contribute effectively to climate financing.

Ethiopia is actively pursuing initiatives to make Addis Ababa more attractive and environmentally friendly. Ongoing city development projects in Addis Ababa are enhancing the city’s appearance and living standards, he stated.

The Ambassador underscored the vital role of modern waste management in fostering a clean and sustainable environment in a burgeoning city like Addis Ababa, reinforcing Sweden’s support for these initiatives.

As COP29 approaches in Baku, the Swedish government is engaged in various global initiatives to facilitate access to financing for developing countries. The Ambassador confirmed Sweden’s contributions to these efforts.

“Climate financing is crucial for countries like Ethiopia to bolster their climate actions, and this is a collaborative focus in our bilateral relations. It is essential that climate financing commitments are fulfilled for the benefit of developing nations,” he concluded.
