Sudan expresses readiness to prevent movement of armed elements in areas bordering Ethiopia
Addis Ababa, July 18, 2022 (FBC) – The Technical Committee of the Security and Defence Council of Sudan chaired by the head of the Sovereign Council held a meeting yesterday on various issues including activities underway to resolve Ethiopia-Sudan border dispute.
In a statement released after the meeting, the Sudanese army spokesman Brig. – Gen Nabil Abdallah Ali said the Technical Committee of the Security and Defence Council decided to open the Gallabat crossing point starting from Sunday, July 17.
According to Brig. – Gen Nabil Abdallah Ali, Sudan is ready to work in cooperation with Ethiopia to halt movement of any armed elements between borders of the two countries.
Brigadier General Nabil Abdullah stated that the meeting also decided to intensify the monitoring of international borders, and to prevent the movement of any armed elements between the two countries, with tight coordination between them.
He announced the reopening of the border crossing with Ethiopia citing confiding building measures by Addis Ababa. Brig. – Gen Nabil Abdallah Ali said that high level officials of the two countries are holding discussions to bring an immediate solution to the border dispute.
Brig. – Gen Nabil Abdallah Ali pointed out that talks between the leadership of the two countries are underway to settle the border dispute. Ali further added saying the decision was “in return for the goodwill measures shown by the Ethiopian side to address the situation.”
Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and Head of the Sovereign Council of Sudan Abdel Fattah al-Burhan held a meeting on July 5, 2022 on the sidelines of an IGAD summit in Nairobi to discuss ways of resolving the border dispute between the two countries and other bilateral issues of mutual concern.
