SSGI’s multi-satellite data receiving station goes operational
Addis Ababa, February 7, 2024 (FBC) – The Ethiopian Space Science and Geospatial Institute (SSGI) multi-satellite tracking and data receiving ground station that will obtain foreign currency commenced operations, SSGI confirmed.
Launched in May 2021, the data receiving ground station is said to be capable of receiving high-quality satellite data with resolution up to 50 centimeters using the multi-satellite data reception station.
The service operates on a framework whereby countries and organizations requiring data reception station services remunerate based on the frequency of satellite passes or the duration of usage per minute.
Yishrun Alemayehu, the State Minister of Innovation and Technology, officially inaugurated the service at Entoto Observatory and Research Center today. On this occasion, the State Minister remarked that the initiation of the service plays a pivotal role in expediting Ethiopia’s economic development through the generation of income from various countries and organizations due to the potential services it offers.
Furthermore, he emphasized that the station will enhance Ethiopia’s global reputation and influence in the field of satellite operation and data reception station management.
The Director-General of the Space Science and Geospatial Institute, Abdisa Yilma, asserted that the station has generated foreign currency through the provision of services to over 11 satellites owned by various nations and organizations.
The SSGI DG articulated that his institute has dedicated over a year to initiating the service.
