Sci-tech, predictive capabilities key in preparing and responding to seismic activities – DPM

Addis Ababa, January 16, 2025 (FMC) – Deputy Prime Minister of Ethiopia Mr. Temesgen Truneh stated that technology, scientific research, analysis, and predictive capabilities play a critical role in preparing for and responding to earthquakes.

The Deputy Prime Minister’s disclosed ongoing activities to respond to seismic activities in a social media post after his visit to Addis Ababa University’s Institute of Geophysics, Space Science, and Astronomy today.

On the occasion, Mr. Temesgen and his team observed “exceptional advancements” in earthquake-related scientific studies. “These efforts highlight the importance of integrating cutting-edge research into disaster management strategies,” he said.

Since the emergency meeting of the National Disaster Risk Management Council last week, the government has strengthened its response to recent alarming natural disasters in some parts of Afar and Oromia region in ensuring alignment with the national disaster response plan, the Deputy Premier underscored.

“Our focus in disaster-affected areas remains on organizing essential infrastructure, providing temporary housing, delivering humanitarian aid, and conducting scientific analysis to guide recovery efforts,” he noted.

Temesgen asserted that the government is committed to empowering research institutes by fostering a robust presence equipped with advanced technology and skilled personnel.

This approach will significantly enhance national preparedness and resilience against future disasters, he added.

It is to be recalled that the Council said last week that more than 58,000 citizens in Afar and Oromia regions have been relocated to temporary shelters due the risk of earthquakes and being provided with the necessary provisions.
