Scholar highlights role of local charities in supporting government livelihood initiatives

Addis Ababa, October 19, 2024 (FBC) – Associate Professor Adem Kamil Faris, an expert in the history of Islam in Ethiopia, emphasized the vital role local charity organizations play in bolstering government efforts to tackle social challenges and improve the lives of vulnerable communities.

During an event organized by Yesir Lena, a local charity organization praised by Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed for its humanitarian contributions, Professor Kamil outlined the significant impact these organizations have on poverty alleviation and improving the welfare of disadvantaged populations facing social issues.

He remarked that local charities function as essential partners to the government, supporting its national objectives through initiatives that foster job creation and humanitarian outreach. He commended Yesir Lena’s various programs, including rehabilitation efforts for orphans and the elderly, women’s tailoring and sewing training, and rural water development initiatives, stating these efforts deserve community and government recognition and support.

Ustaz Nuru, the Founder and CEO of Yesir Lena, shared that the organization currently supports 654 orphans, 376 low-income women, and 210 elders. The center is dedicated to nurturing orphaned children and providing sewing and tailoring training for unemployed women and girls.

Ustaz Nuru reported that Yesir Lena has established 331 rural drinking water facilities across several regions of the country. In addition to humanitarian assistance, the organization is committed to creating a skilled workforce by providing financial support to students from low-income families at various educational levels.

Despite the significant efforts, Ustaz Nuru noted that more than 30,000 underprivileged individuals are still in need of assistance, urging the community and stakeholders to continue their support.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has previously visited the Yesir Lena Charity Organization, praising both the relief efforts undertaken and the dedication shown by the founder Ustaz Nuru. The Mayor of Addis Ababa, Adanech Abiebie, also acknowledged the organization’s humanitarian work, presenting it with a certificate of recognition for its contributions.
