Russia’s advancements in agricultural technology crucial for Africa’s food security, journalists assert

Addis Ababa, August 15, 2024 (FBC) – A group of journalists from Ethiopia, Tanzania, Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo, and Tunisia recently toured various industrial and technology facilities in Russia’s agriculture sector, as part of the press tour organized by Rossotrudnichestvo last week.

The journalists explored several key sites, including Krovets Tractors (JSC Peterburgsky Traktorny Zavod), Tauras-Fenix packaging solutions, and the PhosAgro mineral fertilizers plant. Upon conclusion of the visit, they expressed admiration for the technological innovations and production capabilities of Russian enterprises, highlighting their significant role in advancing global food security efforts, particularly in Africa.

Dingindaba Jonah Buyoya, a reporter from Diamond TV Zambia, shared his insights with FBC, stating, “My visit to Russia’s agro-industry has illuminated the country’s commitment to achieving self-sufficiency while aiding Africa through the reliable supply of agricultural products and technologies crucial for food security.”

He noted the broad industrial growth within Russia, particularly in the agricultural sector, and emphasized, “The transformation here is vast, with modern machinery, including tractors, and effective packaging solutions being developed domestically. Their well-equipped ports further facilitate exports of crops, fertilizers and agricultural technologies to regions including Africa, demonstrating their capability to address global food insecurity challenges.”

Buyoya pointed out the pressing need for African nations to collaborate with Russia to tackle the current food insecurity issues exacerbated by climate change and other challenges.

Solomon Haileyesus, the editor-in-chief and newscaster at Ethiopian Broadcasting Corporate, also reflected on his experience, stating that he witnessed remarkable advancements in Russian agricultural practices and manufacturing. “The massive agricultural machinery, large-scale fertilizer plants, and technology hubs are vital contributors to the sector’s growth. The tractor factory we visited in Saint Petersburg plays a crucial role in mechanizing food production globally,” he explained.

He also highlighted Russia’s commitment to expanding port facilities to enhance exports of agricultural goods to African markets. “With deep-rooted diplomatic ties, Russia has consistently supported Ethiopia and other African nations at international forums such as the UN Security Council. Its ongoing support in science, technology, and education underscores its enduring solidarity with Africa, paving the way for stronger partnerships in the agricultural sector.”

Solomon noted that the rise of a multipolar world presents an opportunity for enhanced economic cooperation between Africa and Russia, particularly in agriculture. “Ethiopia should further strengthen its collaboration with Russia to bolster its efforts towards achieving food sovereignty and security,” he concluded.
