Russia says Ethiopia’s announcement of unilateral ceasefire in Tigray ignites hope

Addis Ababa, July 1, 2021 (FBC) – Permanent representative of Russia to the UN, Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya appreciated Ethiopia’s announcement of unilateral ceasefire as a good step that ignites hope in several aspects.

In a monthly press briefing, Ambassador Vasily Nebenzya said the ceasefire will serve as an opportunity to improve the situation in the region.

He called on the international community to recognize the massive humanitarian works Ethiopia has undertaken in Tigray to address needs of impacted people in the region.

“We have to recognize that the bulk of humanitarian assistance is to the Tigray region is still being provided by the Ethiopian government. We also are advocating other humanitarian access for the international organizations as well.” He said.

Meanwhile, South Sudan and Kenya affirmed support for the unilateral ceasefire Ethiopia has recently declared in Tigray region.
