Resumption of Ethiopian flights to Monrovia to boost ties for two countries

Addis Ababa, November 30, 2024 (FBC) — The direct passenger flights resumed by Ethiopian Airlines to Monrovia, Liberian capital today is expected to boost the overall ties between Ethiopia and Liberia, CEO Mesfin Tassew and Liberia’s Transport Minister Sirleaf Tyler said.

The resumption of the flights, which will be three times a week, is expected to facilitate smoother travel, enhance people-to-people ties, promote economic growth, and strengthen the relationship between Ethiopia and Liberia, it was indicated.

Ethiopian Airlines Group CEO, Mesfin Tassew underscored the airline’s commitment to expanding its network across Africa and beyond, stating that its dedication was also demonstrated in its recent expansions including new routes to Dhaka, Port Sudan, and now adding Monrovia to the list.

“Liberia will be the 41st African country and Monrovia our 63rd city in Africa where we operate. Our goal is to connect all 54 African countries,” Mesfin stated.

The historical relationship with Monrovia, which dates back to November 1966, he said, citing the contribution of Ethiopian Airlines at that time in facilitating trade, tourism, and cultural exchange in Liberia.

“Our dedication to the people of Liberia has never wavered. This reinstatement is a testament to our belief in the potential of this great city,” Mesfin said.

The CEO also announced the state-of-the-art Boeing 787 aircraft for the direct flights to Monrovia, enhancing the travel experience for passengers.

According to him, the inaugural flight had a promising load with 16 passengers in Business Class and 245 in Economy, indicating the strong demand for the route.

Ethiopian Airlines offers the best connection to over 140 global destinations, ensuring that Liberia is well-linked to the world, he stated.

Expressing his gratitude, Mesfin acknowledged the support of the Liberian officials to make the resumption of the flight possible.

“Let us look forward to a new chapter of connectivity, collaboration, and growth as we bring Ethiopian Airlines back to Monrovia,” he added.

Liberia’s Transport Minister Sirleaf Tyler lauded the resumption of flights as a historic and momentous occasion for Liberia, offering new pathways for growth and global connectivity.

On behalf of the Liberian government, Tyler extended greetings from Liberia’s President Joseph Boakai.

“This line symbolizes more than just air travel; it embodies our commitment to economic growth and cultural exchange,” Tyler noted.

He emphasized the significant benefits of the resumed flights, including economic growth, cultural exchange, educational opportunities, trade, investment, and enhanced diplomatic relations.

“Ethiopian Airlines, as the largest carrier in Africa, has been a catalyst for growth and development across the continent. Re-establishing routes to Liberia exemplifies your commitment to connect our communities, bridging cultures and unlocking new opportunities,” Tyler added.

The minister also expressed support for Ethiopian Airlines with a view to further strengthening ties between the two countries, ENA reported.

“Our nation pledges to work hand in hand with you to ensure this partnership flourishes and is sustainable, offering economic growth and opportunities for both our peoples,” he added.
