Renovated Africa Hall in Addis Ababa serves as key research center, tourism destination

Addis Ababa, October 24, 2024 (FBC) – The renovated African Hall in Addis Ababa will serve as key research center and tourism destination, showcasing Africa’s rich history and diverse art, according to architects.

It is to be recalled that Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and UN Secretary General António Guterres inaugurated African hall this week, a landmark of liberation and a symbol of Pan-African unity.

A discussion on Africa Hall’s role in Ethiopia’s architectural landscape took place at the newly renovated venue today.

Habtamu Getachew, President of the Architects Association told local news agency ENA that the renovation of Africa Hall has transformed it into a prime destination for many African countries and beyond, serving as hub for visit and research. He added that its rich history serves as a tribute to all Africans.

According to him, Ethiopia has played a key role in the pan-African movement, working alongside nations in their struggles for freedom and now collaborating on development initiatives.

Dawit Banti, Lecturer and Researcher of architect at Addis Ababa University said Africa Hall has a rich historical background, with its construction marking a pivotal moment in Addis Ababa’s identity.

He emphasized that as Ethiopia champions unity in Africa, Africa Hall stands as a key landmark, embodying history and progress in the urban landscape.

Fasil Giorghis, Associate Professor of Architecture on his part emphasized that Africa Hall has become a symbol of Africa’s unity and progress through its role as a venue for diplomatic meetings and cultural events.

He noted that its architectural and historical significance resonate strongly, marking it as a vital landmark in Addis Ababa’s journey toward modernity.

Fasil highlighted that Africa Hall not only reflects Ethiopia’s rich architectural heritage but also serves as a hub for diplomacy and cultural exchange.

The recent modern enhancements on the African Hall have preserved its historical essence while meeting contemporary needs, positioning it as a central venue for future collaborative events across the continent.

Originally inaugurated in 1961 by Ethiopia’s Emperor Haile Selassie, Africa Hall is the birthplace of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), now the African Union (AU), and has witnessed numerous pivotal moments in Africa’s history.
