Release of prisoners tailored for lasting peace, consolidation of victory: PM Abiy Ahmed
Addis Ababa, February 22, 2022 (FBC) – Addressing the 3rd emergency session of the parliament, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed briefed members of the parliament on the activities underway to ensure peace in the country.
Concerning the Released Prisoners, the Premier noted saying: “We must be cautious not to fall prey to the enemy’s scheme. We released the prisoners for three reasons: to bring lasting peace, taking into consideration the overall situation of the prisoners, and to consolidate our victory,”
“As a result, true triumph necessitates victory in the realm of peace. This decision has greatly helped Ethiopia. We must not compromise on decisions for the lasting good of the country,” Abiy noted.
The Prime Minister underscored that “In a civil war, there is no such thing as a total triumph. When one party wins a combat while the other party is momentarily defeated, this is known as temporary victory. In turn, the defeated party would resurrect and assault,”
Negotiation is the upcoming all-inclusive national consultation, he said, adding that the Commissioners of the newly constituted National Dialogue Commission have simply been given the task of coming up with proposals. “The Ethiopian people will make the final decisions,” he stressed.
“Negotiation is a method of identifying problem-solving options. We have been betrayed while making efforts to rebuild acknowledging that the Tigray region is a part of our country,” he noted.
There has been no negotiation with the TPLF yet, he said, adding that this does not rule out the possibility of discussions.
Regarding the situation in Afar Region, the international community has no grounds to accuse Ethiopia for the terrorist Group renewed its belligerence in the region. It is worth noting that the attack is an attempt to hinder humanitarian aid, he said.
“To alleviate the situation, the federal Government of Ethiopia is working closely with the regional government of Afar,” the Premier added.
