Rehabilitated ex-combatants successfully reintegrate into society in Tigray Region

Addis Ababa, December 3, 2024 (FBC) – The National Rehabilitation Commission (NRC) has announced the successful reintegration of 640 ex-combatants who completed rehabilitation training at two centers in the Tigray Region. The trainees finished their programs at the Mekelle and Edaga Hamus centers, marking a significant step in their return to community life, according to Lt. Col. Gosaye Tilahun, the NRC’s director of demobilization.

Currently, 1,360 additional ex-combatants are undergoing training at these centers, with plans for their future reintegration. Lt. Col. Tilahun emphasized that special attention is being given to women and individuals with disabilities within the demobilization and rehabilitation process.

To enhance the reintegration efforts, he noted that the capacity of training centers will continue to be improved, allowing former militants to transition back to normal lives more effectively. The NRC aims to support 75,000 ex-combatants from the Tigray region in leading fulfilling lives over the next four years. Overall, the commission plans to disarm and rehabilitate a total of 371,000 ex-combatants within a span of two years.
