PP Executive Committee concludes meeting
Addis Ababa, August 17, 2020 (FBC) – The Executive Committee of Prosperity Party (PP) today held discussion on current national and political issues.
According to a statement issued after the meeting, the committee assessed the gains made, challenges faced and hopes seen following the reform initiatives introduced two years ago.
The measures taken over the past couple of years shifted the country to a new chapter, it said, indicating the successes achieved in building democracy, finalizing delayed mega projects, stimulating the economy and strengthening ties with neighbouring countries.
The committee also reviewed the natural and manmade disasters faced in the last two years, especially the challenges from those forces who tried to derail the reform, grab power and dismantle the nation.
However, the statement said, their attempts had been foiled owning to the stable and wise leadership offered by the party.
The party evaluated the efforts made in collaboration with the public to minimize the threats posed by COVID-19 pandemic, desert locust and flooding as satisfactory.
The government injected 10 billion birr to reduce the impact of the pandemic on the economy and created 3 million jobs, the statement noted, adding the country also managed to generate $3 billion from exports in the concluded budget year, a 14% increase compared to last year.
The statement also mentioned the completion of the first filling of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and the planting of 5 billion trees as key successes in the budget year.
Works on the GERD project is progressing well, it said, adding efforts are underway to raise Ethiopia’s forest coverage to 30% by planting 20 billion trees over the coming four years.
The party vowed to strengthen its efforts to ensure rule of law, expand the democratic space, strengthen unity, finalize projects as per schedule and curb spread of COVID-19.
