Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed sends congratulatory message to President of South Africa
Addis Ababa, June 6, 2024 (FBC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has sent his congratulatory message to the President of the Republic of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa, on overseeing a democratic election.
In his message of felicitation to the South African leader, PM Abiy noted on X that the latest election in South Africa honored the principles of democracy. “Congratulations to my brother Cyril Ramaphosa, on overseeing an election process that truly honors the principles of democracy.”
“Your leadership in ensuring a fair, transparent, and peaceful election is a testament to your commitment to the will of the people and the democratic values that bind us all.”
South Africa’s national election was held on May 29, 2024. The country’s Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) officially announced last Sunday evening that the ruling African National Congress (ANC) has secured 159 out of 400 seats in the National Assembly in the 2024 general elections.
The main opposition party, the Democratic Alliance (DA), came second with 87 seats in the National Assembly, followed by the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party with 58 seats and the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) with 39 seats, according to the official election results released by the IEC at the Results Operation Center (ROC) in Midrand, Johannesburg.
More than 27 million South Africans reportedly took part in the 2024 national and provincial elections on May 29 to elect a new National Assembly and provincial legislatures.
