Preparations underway to host AU Summit 2024: MoFA

Addis Ababa, November 3, 2023 (FBC) – A discussion was held with the members of the National Committee representing various institutions regarding the preparations for the African Union Executive Council meeting and the African Union Summit to be held in February 2024, in Addis Ababa.

The Chairwoman of the National Committee of the summit, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Burtukan Ayano, explained the structure of the national organizing committee, which has more than 22 institutions as members, to prepare the event with excellence, given Ethiopia is the diplomatic capital of Africa and the seat of the African Union.

It is expected that member countries and delegations represented by Presidents, Vice-Presidents, Prime Ministers, Foreign Ministers and other high-ranking officials, as well as the Secretary-General of the United Nations and heads of other international and continental organizations will participate in the Summit, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ethiopia.

Amb. Birtukan stated that each institution should fulfill the tasks and responsibilities given in detail and that everyone should contribute to the success of the African Union Summit, which is one of the achievements of Ethiopia’s multilateral diplomacy, which is a matter of national importance.

It is stated that the National Committee will monitor the plans’ implementation by setting up other sub-committees and the secretariat.

The executive meeting is expected to take place from February 14 to 15 and the African Union Summit will be held from February 17 to 18, 2024 in Addis Ababa, MFA Ethiopia indicated.
