Ethiopia planted 7.5bn seedlings during this year’s planting season: Premier
Addis Ababa, September 18, 2023 (FBC) – Ethiopia has planted more than 7.5 saplings during the current green legacy season, surpassing the intended target, 6.5 billion seedlings, for the current planring season, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD) confirmed.
Confirming the completion of this year’s Green Legacy season, the Prime Minister has commended the people of Ethiopia for the hardwork and perseverance showed towards the collective achievement.
“The strong and resilient hands of Ethiopians continue to make history,” he said in a social media post, adding that “At the completion of this year’s Green Legacy season, we achieved more than our intended target and have collectively planted 7.5 billion saplings nationwide.”
The Prime Minister said the government of Ethiopia honors the hard work and perseverance shown by the people across the country.
Recall that Ethiopia has planted a staggering 25 billion seedlings in the first phase of the Green Legacy campaign which was launched in 2019 by Prime Minister Abiy. It is noted that seedlings of trees, fruits, and cattle feeds were planted during the first phase of the Green Legacy Initiative.
On 17th July 2023, the second phase commenced under the theme “Let’s plant our future today,” aiming to plant another 25 billion seedlings across Ethiopia.
Following the launching of the second phase of the Green Legacy Initiative, Ethiopia has broken its record of the most trees planted in 12 hours on 17 July, 2023. More than 566 million saplings have been planted throughout the country during the 12 hours spree, per a government report.
