Powering the Nation: Energy generated from GERD being distributed properly
Addis Ababa, December 27, 2024 (FMC) – Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP) has announced that the Holeta 500 KV substation is effectively distributing the power generated from the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD).
According to Mr. Tilahun Azezew, Head of the Substation, the distribution station is equipped with seven transformers, each with a capacity of 750 megavolt ampere.
Note that the GERD-Dedessa-Holeta 500kv power transmission project is programmed to transmit power from GERD hydroelectric power station through two 500kv double circuit transmission line to the new Dedessa, then Holeta substations and then through 400kv from Holeta to Sebeta II, Holeta to Sululta II, and Holeta to Akaki II existing substations.
In that regard, Mr. Tilahun stated that the Holeta substation is receiving 1,500 megawatts of power from the Dedesa distribution station, which is generated by GERD’s four turbines, and distributing it to different distribution substations and connect it to the grid.
He said that the substation receives power from Dedesa through four lines of 500 KV and is supplying power to Sululta, Sebeta, and Gelan distribution substations through 400 KV combined lines.
When fully operational, all of GERD’s power turbines have the capacity to generate 5,150 megawatts of power, EEP reminded.
