Population, housing census to be conducted in forthcoming triennium – Ministry
Addis Ababa, February 1, 2024 (FBC) – The Ministry of Planning and Development (MoPD) disclosed its intention to undertake a nationwide census encompassing both population and housing within the upcoming triennium.
In the company of ministers, distinguished government officials, as well as representatives from the United Nations’ agencies and various partners, the Ministry divulged the Ethiopian Statistics Development Program, slated for execution over the ensuing three years.
The Ministry indicated that in conformance to the unveiled program, economic, agricultural, and population and housing census will be conducted in the next three years.
In her discourse during the unveiling occasion, Minister of Planning and Development, Fitsum Aseffa, articulated that the forthcoming agricultural census, projected within this program, will furnish comprehensive insights into the agricultural domain. This encompasses the meticulous documentation of irrigated wheat cultivation, a recently amalgamated initiative within the agricultural system.
The Minister underscored the government’s earnest aspiration to carry out a population and housing census. She expounded that the execution of the national population and housing census, aligning with international benchmarks, encountered impediments, notably conflicts, resulting in a temporary slowdown.
Now the conflict in the northern part of the country is closed with peace accord and the security situation in other areas of the country is returning to normalcy, the planned census will be undertaken in the aforementioned period, it is indicated.
The Ministry of Planning and Development indicated that the census requires a substantial amount of preparatory endeavors.
