Police arrest foreigner with more than 2m fake US currency
Addis Ababa, October 2, 2020 (FBC) –The Addis Ababa Police Commission said it has arrested a foreign national with more than 2 million fake US dollars.
The suspect was arrested in the capital city, Bole sub-city, at a place commonly known as Shola Sefere Genet, said Getu Argaw, Addis Ababa Police Commissioner.
He said a total of 2, 470,000 fake US dollars were seized in a house the suspect had rented in the area.
According to the Commissioner, the foreigner was apprehended following tips provided by the community. Police have stared investigation over the fake currency.
Similarly, as part of efforts to fight foreign currency black markets, police seized over 7.2 million Ethiopian birr, over 117, 000 US dollars, 400 Euros, 740 pound sterling, 700 South African Rand and over 800 UAE Dirham, he said.
In total, police captured over 15 million in counterfeit Ethiopian currency following the introduction of the new currency notes last month.
