PM commends Africa for demonstrating capability in facing COVID19 crisis
Addis Ababa, March 22, 2021 (FBC) –Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has commended Africa’s demonstration of capability in facing the COVID19 crisis and its readiness to help formulate and implement solutions.
He made the remark while opening the 53rd session of the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa Conference (ECA) of African Ministers of Finance, Planning and Economic Development.
The conference is being held under the theme “Africa’s sustainable industrialization and diversification in the digital era in the context of COVID−19”.
In his remarks, the Premier highlighted the timeliness of the agenda as there is a pressing need for innovative responses in relation to natural and human disruptions the globe is facing.
He said innovation is important for Africa to effectively respond to COVID19 pandemic.
As a way forward, Prime Minister Abiy reiterated the need for focused efforts towards digital transformation, climate-smart economy and enabling institutional framework for implementation.
Minister of Finance, Ahmed Shide, for his part highlighted the importance of sustainable industrialization as a valid development strategy for Ethiopia and Africa.
He emphasized that the industrialization developments in Africa require innovative approaches and need to be supported by technology and digitalization.
The Minister also highlighted that the continent’s industrial development could benefit from digitalization especially in the time of the COVID 19 pandemic where the virus has accelerated the uptake of digital solutions, tools, and services.
He also used the opportunity to elaborate on Ethiopia’s 10 years perspective development plan and the home-grown economic reform agenda which paves the way for inclusive and sustainable industrial development.
