PM Abiy discussed Ethiopia’s desires for sea outlet with BRICS leaders – GCS Minister
Addis Ababa, October 25, 2024 (FBC) – Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed Ethiopia’s desire for access to the sea based on the principle of give and take during discussions with leaders of BRICS member countries, according to the Government Communication Service.
Recall that the 16th BRICS Summit was held in Kazan, Russia, where Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed participated accompanied by a delegation of ministers.
During his talks with leaders of BRICS member countries and other partners on bilateral and multilateral issues on the sidelines of the Summit, the prime minister emphasized that Ethiopia’s quest for sea outlets is based on shared interests.
In light of this, Government Communication Service Minister Legesse Tullu stated that apart from the premier’s participation in the summit, he engaged in both bilateral and multilateral consultations, emphasizing on areas of common interests.
Given the history, geography, population, and economic development of the country, Ethiopia needs to have sea outlets, Prime Minister Abiy emphasized during the discussions he held with various leaders.
The minister emphasized that Ethiopia’s request for access to a sea is based on the principle of mutual benefit.
Legesse also pointed out that the prime minister’s proposal to reform the international financial system has been accepted by other countries.
According the minister, the summit has accepted calls made by leaders including by Prime Minister Abiy for a more inclusive international financial system and adopted a common position.
Ethiopia also shared the reforms it is implementing in various areas, including economic reform and institutional capacity building, Legesse added.
He also noted that the summit provided an opportunity for Ethiopia to benefit more than expected in the areas of economy, trade, investment, and other fields.
The Minister pointed out that the decisions made at the BRICS Summit and the common positions taken by the summit align with Ethiopia’s national interests, as called by local news agency ENA.
