PM Abiy Ahmed succeeds in diplomatic undertaking in Sudan: FM Gedu

Addis Ababa, August 26, 2020 (FBC) – Foreign Minister Gedu Andargachew said Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed has succeeded in diplomatic undertaking during his official visit to Sudan.

Prime Miniser Abiy has returned home after completing his single day official visit to Sudan.

During his stay in Sudan, the premier held discussions with Sudanese Prime Minister Abdalla Hamdok and Sovereign Council Chairperson, Abdel Fettah al Burhan on bilateral, regional affairs and issues related to the Grand Ethiopian Renaissace Dam.

Regarding PM’s visit to the Sudan, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Gedu Andargachew remarked that what they have been experiencing in common in their current transitional period has brought Ethiopia and Sudan in to solidarity.

The relations between Ethiopia and Sudan have public ground beyond relations among their governments, the foreign minister said.

He said that Prime Minister Abiy has discussed with Sudanese Leaders on ways of further boosting bilateral ties among the two countries.

Recalling Sudan’s complaint regarding the flow of water from GERD, Gedu the leaders agreed to address disputes only through dialogue.

Prime Minister Abiy briefed the leaders of Sudan on the significance of the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam in addition to its use for Ethiopia, Gedu said.

They agreed that the AU led negotiation marks a milestone that Africans can bring an African solutions to their problems, according to Gedu.

Prime Minister Abdela Hamdok expressed gratitude to his counterpart for Ethiopia’s contribution to peaceful power transition in Sudan.

The two reached a consensus that enhanced relationship between Ethiopia and Sudan benefits Africa in addition to strengthening regional socio economic integration, and pledged commitment to further boost ties among the nations.

Prime Minister of Sudan Abdela Hamdok is set to pay official visit to Ethiopia soon.
