Photograph Exhibition Opens at Ethiopian Science Academy
Addis Ababa, December 23, 2024 (FMC) – The Blaten Geta Hiruy Woldeselassie Creative Arts Center, part of the Ethiopian Academy of Sciences, is hosting a new photography exhibition titled “Fragments of Change.” Named after a prominent author and diplomat, the center is housed in a heritage site dating back ninety years.
The center features a small museum with artifacts and photographs highlighting Hiruy Woldeselassie’s contributions, alongside professional forums, art exhibitions, and artist residency programs. It has successfully conducted three notable photography exhibitions so far, including themes surrounding historical events and renowned artists like Afewerk Tekle, it was stated on the launching ceremony.
This latest exhibition, in collaboration with the Addis Ababa Photographers Association, showcases the work of five established photographers, each offering a unique perspective on Ethiopia’s cultural and social landscapes. The event aims to foster professional discussions on development challenges within the arts sector.
Among the works of art showcased at the exhibition, Antonio Fiorente’s vibrant photos of Merkato reflect life’s layers, while Maheder Haileselassie’s Home – Walls series documents personal spaces, exploring identity through curated objects. Nahom’s focus on young female skateboarders in Harar introduces a dynamic element, celebrating youth-hood. Mulugeta Ayene’s works on public participation in major national ecebts, Michael Tsegaye’s Future Memories series reflects on urban transformation, linking the city’s evolving identity to personal and collective narratives.
Together, these works create a compelling narrative, illustrating how photography serves as a tool for reflection and reimagining society, the Academy stated.
