Peace Minister, EIASC President discuss cooperation on peace-building initiatives

Addis Ababa, December 25, 2024 (FMC) – Ministry of Peace stated that it will work more closely with the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council (EIASC) on matters pertaining to national peace building initiatives.

Strengthening cooperation on peace building efforts with religious institutions was discussed during the meeting between the Minister of Peace, Mr. Mohammad Idris, and the President of the Ethiopian Islamic Affairs Supreme Council, Sheikh Haji Ibrahim Tufa, earlier today.

During the discussion, Sheikh Haji Ibrahim Tufa noted that the Council is doing various works to strengthen the solidarity of Muslims and peace-building efforts in the country. He also called on the government, especially the Ministry of Peace, to provide the necessary support during the upcoming Majlis elections.

In response, the Minister appreciated the Council’s efforts in addressing the long-standing dispute between clans in the border areas of Afar and Somali regional states. Mr. Mohammed also called for the continuation of the Council’s engagement in comprehensive peace and development activities.

Acknowledging the invaluable role of religious institutions in building lasting peace, the Minister called on the Supreme Council to hold nationwide prayers for the country’s peace.

Mr. Mohammed also reiterated his government’s unwavering stance to ensure durable peace.

Recall that the Minister had also a meeting with the Patriarch of the Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahdo Church (EOTC) His Holiness Abune Mathias I on Tuesday (December 24) to discuss peace building matters.
