Parliaments of Ethiopia, Germany explore ways to strengthen bilateral cooperation

Addis Ababa, April 14, 2022 (FBC) – Foreign and Peace Affairs Standing Committee of the House of Peoples Representatives and a German parliamentary delegation held a meeting to discuss bilateral issues of common interest.

Chairman of the Foreign and Peace Affairs Standing Committee, Dima Negewo (PhD), underlined that Ethiopia and Germany have a long and strong diplomatic relationship.

Dima noted that Ethiopia has been on the path of reform for the past four years despite the conflict and drought conditions in some areas of the country, adding that the government is working hard to overcome these challenges.

He told the delegation that the government is providing regular flow of humanitarian aid to people in need in Tigray region.

Dima added that the government is striving to resolve differences through dialogue and consultation through the already established National Dialogue Commission to ensure lasting peace in the country.

Ethiopia is building the Grand Renaissance Dam with the contribution of its own people under the slogan “The dam is mine” to alleviate poverty, he said, adding that the dam does not detriment the interests of other riparian countries.

He further appreciated Germany’s support to Ethiopia in the field of science and technology, calling for continues cooperation between the two countries in areas of investment, education, technical assistance and institutional capacity building.

For his part, Germen parliamentary representative Roderich Kiesewetter said that his country has a longstanding relationship with Ethiopia, pledging commitment to furthering the ties in multifaceted areas of cooperation.

He said Germany has been supporting Ethiopia’s efforts in various socio-economic sectors including telecom and promotion of the private sector, reiterating readiness of his country to support endeavors in education, experience sharing and technology transfer areas.
