Office calls for increased humanitarian assistance for IDPs in Debre Birhan town
Addis Ababa, August 5, 2022 (FBC) – Debre Birhan town in Amhara State currently shelters more than 24, 000 people displaced from several parts of Oromia Region due to the terrorist Shene Group attacks.
Jerusalem Children and Community Development Organization delivered food and noon food items worth 7.7 million birr to the IDPs in Debre Birhan in response to the growing humanitarian need in temporary camps located in the town.
According to Head of Jerusalem Children and Community Development Organization, Mulugeta Gebru, the donation includes wheat flour, Pasta, child nutritional foods, blankets and hygiene and sanitation supplies. He said the assistance will be distributed to 8,000 IDPs in the town.
During the handover ceremony, Head of Mayor Office of Debre Birhan town, Tsegaye Beyene stated that currently each temporary shelter is accommodating more than 600 IDPs in a matter that causes suffocation.
“The rainy season is exacerbating the adverse situation in the camps as the coldest weather coupled with the drizzling situation prompted the need for adequate food aid and supply of clothes, the Head noted. Saying that government is trying to supply food and other basic items to the displaced sheltered in the town, the Office Head stressed a need to increase the assistance so to meet the need.
The office further called on all Ethiopians, partners and the international community at large to contribute their share in addressing the soaring humanitarian need among IDPs in the town.
