NBE will focus on reducing inflation via monetary policy measures: Governor
Addis Ababa, July 25, 2023 (FBC) – Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE), Mamo Mihretu, addressed the 20th International Conference on the Ethiopian Economy.
“A ‘cocktail of challenges’ is facing the global economy including high inflation, rising debt, and a particularly sharp funding squeeze facing African countries”. the Governor noted.
He said to address the current mix of challenges, NBE will focus on reducing inflation via monetary policy measures, ensuring the financial sector is stable, modernized, and inclusive; and enhancing NBE’s role as a learning and knowledge-generating institution.
Governor Mamo also made a Call to Action, asking for Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA) and the broader economics community to serve as a ‘marketplace’ of ideas and recommendations and to focus on practical, evidence-based proposals and solutions to some of Ethiopia’s major economic policy issues of the day.
At the two-day conference organized by the Ethiopian Economics Association (EEA) in Addis Ababa, there was a discussion on the results of studies done by various researchers, especially on the opening day; economists shared their views on the topic of “Ethiopian Economic Policy Ideas, Content, Benefits and Implementation”.
The former President of the Ethiopian Economics Association and current Minister of Education Berhanu Nega (Professor) who gave a presentation at the conference on “Ethiopian Economic Policy Ideas”, said that the idea, especially the economists, should not be based on international experience independently, but they should emphasize that they have correctly explored the issues that their society has seen. They did it with his permission.
