MoTL Minister engages in productive bilateral talks with global aviation leaders

Addis Ababa, May 2, 2024 (FBC) – Minister of Transport Alemu Sime engaged in bilateral discussions with aviation sector leaders from various institutions and countries in order to enhance the competitiveness of Ethiopia’s aviation sector and foster collaboration within the industry. These discussions took place in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

The Minister is currently participating in the third edition of the Global Implementation Support Symposium organized by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), held at the Barceló Bávaro Convention Center in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic.

On the sidelines of the Symposium, the Minister took the opportunity to hold consultations with transport and aviation ministers, along with senior officials, from several countries including Canada, the United Arab Emirates, Singapore, and Sierra Leone. Additionally, discussions were held with the President and Secretary General of the ICAO’s council.

The primary objective of these discussions, as conveyed by the Minister through a social media post, was to ensure Ethiopia’s continued competitiveness in the aviation sector. Key areas of focus included manpower training, digitalization initiatives, modernizing air navigation control systems, expanding the production of aircraft components within Ethiopia, and strengthening air service connections across Africa.

The third edition of this annual symposium is taking place from 3oth April to 2nd May 2024 in the Dominican Republic under the overarching theme of “Optimizing Aviation Capacity: Strategies for Safe Skies, Sustainable Future”.

The annual GISS, recognized as the world’s most influential event of its kind, raises government awareness of the crucial importance of air connectivity to their strategic development. It showcases ICAO initiatives, programmes, policies and services that can help ensure a safe, sustainable, and resilient expansion of their aviation sectors.

This event aims to highlight the Organization’s latest digital tools, key initiatives, and collaborative endeavours to support aviation resilience, fostering innovation, promoting sustainable development, and providing operational solutions.

The GISS 2024 is expected to further explore the impact of air transport, tourism and capacity development as key drivers of economic resilience.
