MoA targeting 3mln ha of farmland irrigated wheat in 2023/24
Addis Ababa, October 5, 2023 (FBC) – The Ministry of Agriculture (MoA) confirmed that this year’s irrigation development is planned to cultivate wheat on 3 million hectares of land.
That was confirmed during the Ministry’s National Irrigated Wheat Development campaign in Jimma City.
At the event, Minister of Agriculture Girma Amente said that this Ethiopian year, the nation is targeting irrigated wheat on three million hectares of agricultural land.
The new plan of irrigated wheat on 3 million hectares of farnland will have increased by 1.7 million hectares compared to the 1.3 million hectares of land irrigated in 2015 E.C dry season, Mr. Girma underscored.
He also said that the necessary preparations have been made to avoid shortage of soil fertilizer in meher (rainy Ethiopian season) and bega (dry) growing seasons.
In addition to the existing water pumps, 12 thousand more water motor pumps have been import into the country for this year’s dry season irrigation agriculture.
