Ministry of Health announces delivery continued medical supplies, medicines to Tigray
Addis Ababa, June 7, 2022 (FBC) – The Ministry of Health and other sectors together with partner organizations continue to provide support for integrated health and nutrition services to the people of Tigray.
The Ministry of Health, in collaboration with the National Disaster Risk Management Commission (NDRMC) and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, is working closely with international partners to facilitate and deliver essential medicines, medical, and nutrition supplies to the people of Tigray from January to May 2022.
During the period from January to May, the Ethiopian government facilitated the delivery of medical and nutrition supplies to Tigray through different flights and land transport by partners.
In the last 5 months, a total of over 46 million birr worth of medicines and medical supplies have been sent to the Tigray Region through the Ethiopian Pharmaceutical Supply Service, the Ministry of Health annoced.
Antiretroviral, cardiovascular, ART and OI drugs, TB drugs, antidiabetes and anti-hypertensive medications, essential antibiotics, and other essential medicines have been sent from the program and RDF.
World Health Organization (WHO) has also delivered a total of 135.45 metric tons of health and nutrition supplies to serve 1,128,750 individuals for 3 months.
An estimated 1.2 million USD in medical supplies was provided for essential health services.
“43.28 metric tons of Cholera treatment, 0.215 metric tons of Anti-Malaria, 1.25 metric tons of Covid-19 supplies, 8.852 metric tons of nutrition, 10.849 Metric Tons of Mobile health and Nutrition supplies making the total delivery 64,446 metric tons,”
International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has also delivered 58.1 metric tons of essential drugs for 484,167 individuals for 3 months , and hemodialysis supplies and consumables for treatment of 600 sessions.
Other partners such as UNICEF, Samaritans Purse, Goal Ethiopia, Save the Children, Catholic relief service, CRS, Medical team international, World Vision, UNFPA, UNHCR, IOM, SCI, Plan international, MSF-H provided over 76 metric tons of medical supplies, according to the Ministry.
In total, 269.55 metric tons of shipments have been sent to Tigray in the last five months, the Ministry said.
Despite this support, given the high need and the requests by Ayder hospital, the Ministry of Health has prepared additional shipments, including anesthetics to deliver through ICRC and WHO.
Other donations, such as dialysis consumables, are also in the process of being sent through ICRC. Additional medical equipment and supplies are being imported to be supplied to the region.
