Media urged to contribute share in tackling fake news, disinformation
Addis Ababa, January 5, 2021 (FBC) – Inter-Religious Council of Ethiopia and media organizations discussed ways of tackling fake news and disinformation and maintaining peace and harmony among peoples.
On the occasion, Media organizations have been urged to take lion’s share in the fight against dissemination of fake news and disinformation.
It is stated on the discussion that fake news and disinformation being intentionally spread by individuals and groups put the nation at risk of multifaceted problems.
The media have been also requested to anticipate potential risks being instigated by disinformation trends and refrain from spreading news depend on non-reliable sources that are against interests of the people and the country as well.
The role of media is irreplaceable in preserving peace, maintaining unity and harmony among peoples and supporting democracy building if they work pursuant to fair and impartial way, participants said.
The media shall play their role in combating transmission of any information that might put dignity of human beings and the public security at risk, participants stressed.
Religious leaders, leadership of media organizations, journalists and invited guests have attended the consultative meeting.
