Macroeconomic reform injects new life into Ethiopia’s economic diplomacy – MFA

Addis Ababa, December 5, 2024 (FMC) – The comprehensive macroeconomic reform being implemented in Ethiopia has created a new momentum for the country’s economic diplomacy, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA Ethiopia).

This statement was delivered by the Spokesperson of the Ministry, Ambassador Nebiat Getachew, this morning while delivering bi-weekly media briefing to local and Addis Ababa-based international media correspondents on national, regional, and global issues.

On the occasion, Ambassador Nebiat emphasized Ethiopia’s efforts in political, economic, and citizen-centered diplomacy.

Highlighting his country’s latest engagement on political diplomacy, Ambassador Nebiat highlighted Ethiopia’s growing role as a stabilizing force and an influential nation in the region.

In such score, he underscored Ethiopia’s consistent contributions to regional and global peace and stability. Key developments in this area include visits to Ethiopia by several high-ranking foreign dignitaries and the increasing number of countries seeking to establish embassies in Addis Ababa.

Currently, the city hosts 137 foreign embassies, solidifying its position as a prominent hub for regional and international diplomatic activities.

On economic diplomacy, the Spokesperson noted that Ethiopia has made significant progress over the past week. He attributed this to recent macroeconomic reforms that have enhanced the government’s capacity to foster cooperation in critical sectors and attract foreign direct investment.

He also mentioned successful engagements with the President of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) and representatives from nearly 20 firms based in China, India, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Israel, which have contributed to advancing tangible partnerships.

Meanwhile, Ambassador Nebiat also emphasized the government’s unwavering focus on citizen-centered diplomacy to better serve and protect Ethiopian nationals abroad. He highlighted ongoing efforts by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with key stakeholders, to voluntarily repatriate nationals facing severe conditions in Myanmar due to human trafficking.

He also warned the public against falling victim to online fraudsters offering deceptive promises of opportunities overseas.

Additionally, the Spokesperson announced collaborative efforts with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to repatriate approximately 2,000 Ethiopians in distressing circumstances in Lebanon as swiftly as possible, as reported by the Ministry.
