Julius Nyerere statue unveiled at AU Headquarters in Addis Ababa
Addis Ababa, February 18, 2024 (FBC) – The African Union has unveiled the commemorative statue of Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere at its Headquarters in Addis Ababa during the 37th Summit.
Commissioner of the African Union Commission, Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Mohammed Ould Ghazouani and Heads of Government and State of various African countries have attended the launching event.
Julius Kambarage Nyerere was a renowned anti-colonial activist, a leading pan-Africanist and peace builder who campaigned for Tanganyikan independence from the British Empire.
Julius Nyerere governed Tanganyika as prime minister from 1961 to 1962 and then as president from 1962 to 1964, after which he led its successor state, Tanzania, as president from 1964 to 1985.
