Addis Ababa, January 28, 2021 (FBC) -Japan has donated $70,383 for expansion project of a garment training center in Selam Children’s Village in Addis Ababa.

The grant contract signing ceremony was held today in the presence of ITO Takako, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ethiopia, and Solomon Chali, General Manager of Selam Children’s Village.

Japan funded the project through the Japanese Grant Assistance for Grassroots Human Security Projects (GGP).

Under this project, Japan will support the construction and furnishing of one vocational training building.

Upon completion of the vocational training building, Japanese company the Yamato Sewing Machine Manufacturing. Co., Ltd. will donate 10 sewing machines to Selam Children’s Village.

The implementation of the project will double the number of trainees from the current 120 to 240 per year and improve the livelihoods of youth through short-term training.

The project will also play a significant role in empowering the youth and women, and will also have a positive impact by supplying the burgeoning textile industry around Addis Ababa with skilled workers.

Japan has implemented over 400 projects across Ethiopia since the GGP was introduced in 1989.

The GGP focuses on community development through supporting needy communities in such areas as education, vocational training, access to water and sanitation, economic growth, health and food security, among others.
