Import substitution endeavors bearing fruits: Industry Ministry

Addis Ababa, February 15, 2022 (FBC) – The Ministry of Trade stated that the efforts underway to substitute import products with locally produced items is bearing fruits.

The Ministry said Ethiopia has now been producing military uniforms and shoes locally, and has managed to save foreign currency thereby reduce the pressure on foreign reserves.

Industry Minister Melaku Alebel indicated that the country has produced more than a million military shoes and hundreds of thousands of students’ shoes during the past few years, calling the achievement a promising move.

Meklaku said that the remarkable achievement gained so far is a good sign that Ethiopia can fully substitute imported industrial items with local products in the near future.
