IDPs being reintegrated to their homes in Tselemt and Raya areas, says PM Abiy
Addis Ababa, July 4, 2024 (FBC) – Addressing the parliament, Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed (PhD), noted that Ethiopia has faced prolonged conflict and war, stressing that it’s time to end this cycle of violence.
The government prioritizes peace and has made significant efforts towards peaceful resolution. Sustainable progress depends on peaceful dialogue and resolving issues without resorting to conflict.
The Premier explained about activities being undertaken to build on results of the Pretoria Peace Agreement.
“The Pretoria Agreement marks a cultural shift towards peaceful conflict resolution. Ceasing firing and restarting essential services like banks, airlines, and telecoms is progress. We’ve started returning war-displaced citizens to their villages per the agreement—a crucial step.”
He said that the transitional justice is instrumental to mend the past fractures, and support the ongoing efforts to ensure lasting peace in the country.
We have conducted consultations with various segments of communities to bring peaceful solution to conflicts. Efforts are underway to solve the ongoing conflicts in Oromia and Amhara region, armed groups to follow the path to peace. “We have to silence the guns and turn into development. “ he underscored.
We are ready to pay any price for peace. He called on all militants and those fuelling conflicts without directly involving in the situation to shun violence and seek the path to peace and become active participant in the ongoing development endeavors.
The Premier disclosed that IDPs in Tigray region are being reintegrated to their homes in Tselemt and Raya areas, reiterating government’s commitment to improve livelihoods of people in conflict affected areas.
He commended the reintegration process as a major step to ensure lasting peace and development in the country.
Prime Minister Abiy further promised to strengthen efforts to fight corruption and reinforce investigation into properties gained from unlawful sources.
“Corruption, large or small, erodes our nation & must be eradicated. Legislative reforms & the property recovery bill are crucial steps in Ethiopia’s fight against illegal wealth movements. Ensuring accountability where billions were previously moved illegally is essential now.”
