Human traffickers sentenced to up to 25 years behind bars
Addis Ababa, October 17, 2024 (FBC) – Individuals convicted of human trafficking in 13 cases received prison sentences ranging from one year to 25 years, according to the Ethiopian Federal Police Commission.
As a result, the following convicted individuals were charged with 13 cases and sentenced:
- Teka Wolde-Maryam (M) was sentenced to 25 years imprisonment and 28,000 Birr fine; and in another case, he was also sentenced to 16 years and 6 months in prison.
- Lemma Temaro (M) was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.
- Melese Kahsay (M) was sentenced to 11 years imprisonment and a fine of 76,000 birr.
- Demekech Maguji (F) was sentenced to 15 years in prison and a fine of 30,000 birr.
- Simon Tewolde (M) was sentenced to 3 years and 7 months in prison and a fine of 4,500 Birr.
- Yohannes Fisehaye (M) was sentenced to 5 years and 7 months in prison and a fine of 7,500 Birr.
- Hana Dino (F) was sentenced to 3 years and 3 months in prison and a fine of 2,500 Birr.
- Assistant Sergeant Mohammad Ahmed (M) was sentenced to 6 years and 8,000 Birr fine.
- Gebre-Tinssae Hagos (M) was sentenced to 16 years and 6 months in prison and a fine of 80,000 birr.
- Abdul Shikkur Yimam (M) was sentenced to 10 years and 11,000 Birr fine.
- Muhdin Aman Mohammad (M) was sentenced to 10 years and 11,000 Birr fine.
- Abdulaziz Rahmeto Dantebo (M) was sentenced to 5 years and 6,000 Birr fine.
- Zelalem Birhanu (M) was sentenced to 5 years in prison and a fine of 3,000 Birr.
- Nardos Habte Debele (F) was sentenced to 4 years and 5 months in prison and a fine of 3,500 Birr.
- Frehiwot Balay Girma (F) was sentenced to 6 years in prison and a fine of 110,000 birr.
- Kidus Michael Sambi (M) was sentenced to 4 years and 5 months in prison and a fine of 3500 Birr.
- Mikiyas Teshome Fetula was fined 410,000 birr.
It was indicated that the sentences were handed down by the Federal First Instance Court of Ethiopia – Lideta Bench, which reviewed the criminal records of human trafficking cases found in 13 investigation files. In addition to imprisonment, the court imposed fines ranging from 2,000 to 410,000 birr on the convicted individuals.
It is believed that the sentences and fines are intended to serve as a deterrent to others who may be considering engaging in human trafficking crimes.
