High-level Ethiopian-Danish joint event to be held at COP29 in Baku

Addis Ababa, October 9, 2024 (FBC) – The Ministry of Planning and Development of Ethiopia has  announced a strengthened partnership between Ethiopia and Denmark in the areas of environment and climate change.

In a bilateral meeting held at the Ministry, Mr. Seyoum Mekonen, State Minister of Planning and Development, welcomed Freddy Svane, Ambassador of Denmark to Ethiopia, to discuss collaborative efforts in addressing climate change.

On the occasion, both parties reaffirmed their countries’ commitment to continue working together on environmental issues. In light of this, they agreed to organize a high-level Ethiopian-Danish joint event at the Ethiopian Pavilion during the World Leaders Climate Action Summit, which will be held at COP29 from 12-13 November 2024. The event will focus on forestry development, including Ethiopia’s Green Legacy initiative, which plays a critical role in combating climate change.

Mr. Seyoum emphasized the importance of continued collaboration in fostering a climate-resilient future, particularly through forestry development.

The State Minister shared Ethiopia’s key priorities for COP29, including Green Legacy, Food System Transformation, Sustainable and Climate-Smart Cities, and e-Mobility policy interventions.

On his part, Ambassador Svane confirmed that these priorities are aligned with Denmark’s climate action goals, further strengthening the cooperation between the two nations.

The meeting also discussed Denmark’s invitation for Ethiopia to join the Alliance of Negative Emitters, an initiative led by the Danish Government.

Pertaining to Ethiopia’s ambitious climate policies, Mr. Seyoum emphasized the potential for Ethiopia’s engagement in this initiative, underlining the country’s commitment to a greener and climate-resilient future.

The Ministry of Planning and Development claimed that it is committed to fostering international partnerships that support Ethiopia’s climate goals and looks forward to furthering this important collaboration with Denmark.
