Heads of State and Government adopt, ink IGAD Treaty
Addis Ababa, June 12, 2023 (FBC) – During the Summit of today, IGAD Heads of State and Government adopted and inked the IGAD Treaty, recalling the Directive of the 13th Ordinary Session of the IGAD Assembly held in Nov 2019.
The Treaty confirms the Regional Economic Community status for the organization and aligns it with sister Regional Economic Communities (RECs).
At the conclusion of the Ordinary Summit today, the President of the Republic of Djibouti, Ismael Omar Guelleh, took over the Chairmanship of the regional organization after Sudan’s term came to an end and following a decision by the Assembly of IGAD Heads of State and Government on the basis of the newly adopted IGAD Treaty.
In her remarks regarding the conclusion of the Summit, Maureen Achieng, IGAD Permanent Representative to the AU said “Now on to the pressing business of putting Sudan back on track for the benefit of all her peoples. Silencing the guns and an inclusive dialogue process is a sine qua non.”
